Obituary of Herna Verhaeghe
In Loving Memory
Mrs Herna Verhaeghe of Delhi passed away at St. Joseph's Hospital, Hamilton on Thursday, July 9, 2020 in her 82nd year. Herna was famous for her Speculaas cookies, which she shared throughout the county. Herna and her family immigrated to Canada from Belgium when she was 16 years old. She welded in the family business as a young woman, worked on many Tobacco farms, but she especially enjoyed her time working at and managing the Tots & Teens clothing store in Delhi. Proud Member of the Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Roman Catholic Church and their Catholic Women's League, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 125, Delhi, and Ladies Auxiliary at the Delhi Belgian Club. One of her favourite pastimes was playing cards at both Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church and the Delhi Friendship Centre and at home with her family and friends. Herna enjoyed all kinds of music and she and Alfons shared a love dancing. Herna, her sister Norma and sister in law Andrea were 3 time Tobacco tying winners. Herna’s door was always open for her many friends and family. Former Herna Mary Casier. Beloved wife of the Late Gerard Verhaeghe (1985) and the Late Alfons Persoon (2011). Loving mother of Vickey Saito (Neil), Debbie Noonan (Steve) and Kim Deelen (Dave). Cherished grandmother of Courtney (Michael), Noel (Debbie), Aisha (Jake), Kimberly (Brandon), John (Alex), Kelly (Bryan) and Rob (Bill) and great grandmother to Brock, Hailey and Paxton. Dearest sister of Norma Lebeer (Late Frank, 2014) and Ria DeBock (Stan), and sister in law of Andrea Casier, Simonne Persoon-Himschool, Marcel Persoon (Georgette), Jean Persoon and Anna Persoon. Will be sadly missed by her Grand dogs, Gussy, Georgia and Mya. Also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. Predeceased by her brother, George Casier (2014), by her brothers in law, Gaston (2019), Valentijin (2020), Etienne (1942), by her sisters in law, Angele Persoon-Vercauteren and Adrienne Persoon (1941). In consideration of the continuing health and safety of our friends and family, A Celebration of Life Memorial Service is planned for the future.
